Historic Civil War Tours

Our museum sponsors at least one, sometimes two, historic tours annually. They are led by our very knowledgeable volunteer historians. They are usually on a Saturday, and on many sites not accessible to the general public.

If you are interested in this type of tour please email us at fxstn@fairfax-station.org and we will put you on a list to be notified. Please leave your name, phone number and address. You may also call the museum at 703-425-9225, and leave the same information.

Upcoming Tour

Civil War Tour of the Manassas Gap Railroad

The Manassas Gap rail line; a 77 mile line that ran from Manassas west to Strasburg, then south, up the valley to its termination at Mt. Jackson in the Valley. This line was key to the Great Locomotive heist by Gen. Jackson in May-June 1861 and contributed greatly to the confederate success at 1st Manassas. It was used during the Spring 1862 Confederate withdrawal from Northern Virginia, and was prominent again in Gen. Jackson’s attack on Union supplies at Manassas Junction prior to the Battle of 2nd Manassas.

The tour will cover other interesting but lesser known events that occurred along this rail line as well. Stops are planned at three railroad stations and at Manassas Junction, Thorough Gap, Piedmont (Delaplane), Strasburg and down the line if time permits; as well as the location where the highest ranking U.S. Military railroad official was killed. 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
